With Cu having successfully drawn off the majority of the pursuit with his rapid speed and losing them in the maze of buildings in the city center, the rest of the group was able to move without being fired upon and eventually the Canid Lancer was able to link up back again with them.
They were about a hundred meters from the Cathedral and it was clear this had been where the fighting had been thickest. Buildings had been razed and reduced to rubble by brutal room to room fighting. Entire streets were clogged with destroyed and infested Vehicles sent by the forest. Mounds of the Dead and Ghouls were heaped ontop massive corpse piles where they were now burning in a bright blaze.
But no sign of life yet.
The three soldiers with the group tried their radios and they were silent. No sign of even the faintest signal.
@Game Ping 1
Passive Perception: 24
Cu would notice that in the ruins of the buildings to the right and left of the group that pieces of rubble were suddenly tumbling down the side of them. The structure had been completely stable beforehand and nothing had fallen at the time.
@SquigA gun barrel alongside the hang it belonged to was sticking out under the rubbish he lifted up "reach for the sky, swimsuit," a voice said.
@Squig
Suddenly out of the surrounding rubble, soldiers clad in gray dust matching the asbestos of the buildings emerged holding weapons and shouting for everyone to lay down their arms. One of them was holding a rocket launcher and swearing he would blow apart the blond one if it even moved a finger wrongly.
@Game Ping 1 (edited)"Well, well."
Something metallic clicked on the concerete remains, somehow sounding confident with every step. Out of the smoke of one of the burning corpse piles a man with a leather shotgun shell holder and a tan jacket alongside a red scarf. The thing that stood most about himself was the two revolvers in his hands and he spun them casually as he came forward before lifting them up to take direct aim at Serenity.
"A blondie himbo, a smurf in a blue gimp costume, a Japanese Cosplayer, a lady with the largest, heh, assests I've seen in a while, and a dancer who looks like she wants to plant her dagger in me alongside three soldiers from a battalion that was supposed to have drowned in a river walk into a bar... leading to a bad joke. So why don't ya'll do a nicety or two and explain who the hell you are before I order my men to blow you all to bits?"
(edited)"Well..." he grinned as he continued to aim, "Never played fair at the poker table. You could be a god damn saint for all I care but right now, you answer my questions."
(edited)"General coined that term for me, apparently some Jap thing they do where they wear the attire of those they admire the most," the soldiers all around him continued to aim even as the three men that had tagged along tried to explain who they were. "And that's why I'm dressed as me. You can guess why."
"Heh, headstrong. I like that in my gals."
"Dunno, can't be too careful, man," he said in a mock tone to Sakata,"I got the Japs name. And I don't thinl 'c'mon man' is your name unless your parents had a special hate in their hearts for a baby you."
(edited)"Well look at the thousands of Dead slaughtered all around the cathedral, the fact that we're among them in defensive positions this close to the Cathedral, and take a guess," he shrugged, "I'll give you three. It's a toughie."
@Game Ping 1 (edited)"Oh luck, a genuine leprechaun. Top of the morning to ya! Don't catch me round your pot o' gold or find a four leaf clover round these parts," he laughed as he holstered his revolver, snapping his fingers, "Sorry, boys, guess we'll have to pass on this meal."
As one they lowered their weapons.
"So what are you servants doing in this little hellhole formerly known as Milan? Don't worry. Me and my men are cleared to talk and hear this sorts of stuff. High Command doesn't leave out vital information to the best of the best."
@Game Ping 1 (edited)"I have no grudge against these guys but should we really give them all the details?"
He said
"Servants? So you heard about us huh, well we're here to aid soldiers but it seems we're a bit too late" Cu said before looking at the surrounding areasI advise caution.
The woman however let others handle this interaction. Her skillset would hardly be suitable for this.He grinned, "Too late? Well Cathedrals holding its ground for now. We were dealing with a tank assualt and we were sure the infantry following up with it would finish us off. Then... well... infantry now ain't more than ashes blowing on the wind. Can't have been a tactical nuke from up high, my units in charge of calling that in, and I don't have cancer. So I'll take 500, Alex, and say you lot were responsible for this."
"Heh, well you best be on point with your control," he twirled his revolver, "Or I'll consider you a liability."
"My, my arn't you a cutie?" he stepped forward to take a closer look at it until his face was mere inches from the wiggling thing, "This little fella gave you trouble I'll assume from the sorry state of some of your group."
He turned around to Nobunaga and stared into the barrel of the gun,
"Jesus, haven't seen rifling that good since that gunsmith at Bragg did a rework of my revolvers. You have to introduce me to your gunsmith." he chuckled but it was somewhat clear to Nobunaga he hadn't planned for every method of escalation this might take. The men around them seemed to be far more unnerved than him, wondering if they could raise their rifles in time before the arquebus' fired.
Then he snapped his fingers again bringing them back under his control.
"Now this is all very scary and I have little doubt you'll fire if I say the wrong thing. So why don't I do that?" he said with his cocksure grin but was far more careful with the tone he used. More calculating and cold instead of arrogant and downlooking. "Keep in mind you're pointing your guns at the only men that can call off the largest nuclear airstrike in history of which all of you are right now in the crosshairs of. Now you're all servants so I have little doubt you'd walk away. Most of you anyway. But it wouldn't look good for Chaldea to have caused in the closest thing that can be considered the largest defeat for humanity ever since this Forest appeared."
"I consider myself a betting man and I say I have 50/50 odds here," he took a step towards Nobu.
Then reached out his hand in a diplomatic.
"But I don't like taking risks I shouldn't. That's how you lose all your chips."
"You've far more then impressed me. You're not agents of the Forest I'm sure of that now. You've got the determination and fire in your eyes I like that tells me you'll all be of great use. And with how many men we've lost in the past days, Cathedral could use a more homely guests then a group of brutish soldiers. I'm sure Sister Maria and Priest Leonardo will be greatly appreciative of your presence."
(edited)"He's like that," the irish kid from before would explain to Serenity in a low whisper as the back-and-forth went on, "They're Black Ops. They treat us grunts like shit and cannon fodder. If anything they kill as often as the Dead. Command sends them to deal with mutinies with extreme prejudice."
"They called you guys servants and you said that earlier, what is that?"
@Andle | Cam, Ib, RachEnna, that was his name, nodded. "Hopefully the people you kill deserve it unlike what Black Ops does."
"Afraid no can do," the commander with the revolver responded, "Milan is considered too important until we get our forces across the Po river. If anything my unit is the only one stopping this city from being turned to nuclear ash. If my men back at the Cathedral don't transmit a code every hour, High Command will consider this city overrun and decide to cut its losses."
He crossed his arms, "I can tell you both have the will and mean to enact that. Rather vicious too. You're welcome to the Cathedral and so long as you help us defend it, I'll stay out of your folks hair. Treat others the way you want to be treated, a saying of God and since we're about to be in his house, I find that appropriate."
@Game Ping 1I say we dispose of them. They seem to be more problematic than useful.
Listen, Poison Girl, I know they're rude, but sure is that a reason to murder people? Especially the people we're trying to protect?
Murder of 'innocents' (in his head, at least) was a big no-no in Kintoki's head. So it was best to avoid it.According to the young man over here they killed as many people with their poor decisions and terrible priorities as the dead.
An incompetent general is often more useful to the enemy than to you.
Hnnnrgh... Do we need more blood in our hands? I don't think this is a fight we want to go through. What if the Director gets mad at us?
Kintoki did not have the brains to come up with a better non-basic argument that wasn't 'They're on our side' or 'That's wrong', but it definitely didn't sit right for him to just go and try to kill them all. (edited)"Let's play along for now. If what they said are true, we don't want to get rid of the people that keep this place not a wasteland"
"Much use God's been seen the Forest took over," he brushed his hair back over his head. "Let's move to the Cathedral. We've probably attracted eyes with this sub-par stage act of ours."
With that he began to walk through the rubble motioning the rest to follow as his men disappeared back into the ruins, not leaving a trace.
Like Ghosts.
@Game Ping 1 (react with ✅ if you want to arrive right at the cathedral or ❌ if you want to talk en route)The Cathedral was nothing like Sakata remembered. Where there had been a proud church maintained by a small if dedicated group of church members had now turned into seemingly the only building still standing in a sea of rubble. Even then it was barely standing up. Something massive had blasted the roof wide open and the beautiful facade that Duomo di Milano was famed for was now burned black with dozens of blasted holes from cannon or artillery fire.
The doors opened to reveal more soldiers in black coming out with guns pointed not at the group but at their surroundings. Inside the Cathedral itself gone were the frescos and the altar. Now the pews had either been broken up by firewood or used to barricade the main entrance, side entrance and the broken windows who stained glass now crunched beneath the group's feet.
Soldiers and a executor or two were huddled around fireplaces tending to the wounded or preparing for another battle they were sure could be their last. All of them were bloodied and exhausted after days of non-stop fighting. Refugees were huddled in small groups as well at one of the few parts of the central hall where the roof hadn't been exposed. Just as the group entered there was a fight starting over a half-finished can of tuna. Knives were drawn. Nobody seemed to care. Less mouths to feed.
There were dozens of corpses laid against one wall, linen sheets or plastic tarps thrown over them. Many of them were wearing garments of the church. To Sakata, one of them was familiar from the wrinkled hand with liver-spots poking out under a bloody linen cloth.
"As I said," the revolver wielding soldier said, "A wonderful abode as you can see."
"My men? We've taken a loss here or two. But you should look at the regular troops," he jerked a finger, "Sorry asses took a real beating. Part of an army ten thousand strong that entered this city. Ready to give their lives if it meant that it bought their families a few more hours. Chumps couldn't even last an hour and now we got less than fifty of them left."
"Well I shouldn't say they didn't do anything. They wasted the ammunition of the Dead so that's a plus and removed quite a few mouths that NATO has to feed," he chuckled grimly, "We got maybe three hundred civvies hiding in the basement. I'd eject them out from the Cathedral since they're wasting my food supplies and sitting around moaning about how miserable everything is. Got news for them. Everything miserable including those ungrateful bastards. Like I said earlier I'd eject them and stop them depleting my supplies but some goody-two-shoes named Churchie Leonardo would rather me save three hundred useless assets instead of the hundreds of millions of lives I have a duty to down south. I tell you this Church will be the death of NATO."
@Game Ping 1"I got sent by the big men at the round table to clean up the mess ten thousand couldn't." he said, "I'm their 'break glass only in emergency,' if I see that this city can't be reasonably held I stop transmitting and evacuate with my crew. Big tragedy to anyone still in the city but I have my orders."
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HTSuddenly from the crowd a dirty face young man in a priests garment stepped out and his eyes widened at the new crowd, "It's you again! Ten Thousand years, I thought when you left we'd never see you again!"
"I have met the Golden Berseker before," he exclaimed, "When his party came to take away a Holy Artifact back to Rome. It's good to see you again."
@Game Ping 1He rubbed his arm in a shy manner, "Everyone else is gone. I don't even know what happened to Maria. It's been... hard. And those soldier types in black haven't been helping with how brash and ruthless they've been, even with their own kind."
"Your vote for what missy?" Revolver would ask, "Just how gosh d- you know what? Not even going to make that joke. It's terrible even for me."
He shrugged.
"Yes. Sister Maria. She was with us until a few days ago. They've been such a blur... there was shellfire and a massive explosion that blew open the roof. Rubble collapsed and the Dead came. I had to fend them off with a crowbar and when it was all done I couldn't find her." he looked back, "I searched through the rubble. If there is a corpse it's buried under tons."
`
@Squig"There'll be no need to that," he sadly shook her head, "It would only be a waste of time. You're servants. Don't trouble yourselves with such mundane tasks."
@SquigRevolver would for a moment step away with one of his men who handed him a briefcase,
"Get running kid," he'd jab the boy with the briefcase, "Think I hear one of the dying needing final rites. Over there by the pews."
Revolver turned to Cu with the briefcase. It was a reinforced briefcase of some kind with a digital readout on the side saying 'SERCURE.'
"Let's get that little fella you picked up somewhere safe," he opened the briefcase up. It was more like a cage in there, "This is a containment unit. Unless he can harvest the force of a tatical nuke it's not breaking out of there."
@Game Ping 1"You are one ugly motherfucker," he snapped the cage and the briefcase shut. Now it looked like any usual business briefcase that could be seen on the street. "And a secure one at that. General Vincenzo Camporini will ensure this is taken care of," he handed the briefcase to one of his men "The next attack could come soon. You guys gonna stick around?"
The boy nodded as he returned, unaware of what had happened, "If you would be willing to spare the time, I would thank you Heroic Spirit."
@Game Ping 1 (edited)"Feel free to rest. We have at least ten hours I say before they regroup and try again," he resisted the attempt of Cu trying to take the briefcase.
"'Fraid I can't," Revolver smiled, "I got my orders from up top for NATO to take this is be examined by our top guys in every field. We've taken a hell of a beating and the uniforms I answer want some sort of victory, be it a breakthrough in research or a way to kill these things faster."
@Game Ping 1Cu would take the briefcase with a tug that almost took Revolver's fingers with him. The man almost hissed and he shook his fingers to get the blood flowing again.
"Listen, Gimp-Suit enthusiast, I have my orders right now and I've never disobeyed one and never will under any circumstances. Hundreds of millions of lives are at stake and that little guy in that briefcase could be the key to the salvation of them all. The General has a sound plan to save everyone, a move that could save everything and salvage a frankly pretty fucked situation. We have weeks left, if not days, until Rome is overrun and with it the last chance we have of taking back our homelands, but what do you know? Your a Servant. You look down on us peasants while you go be a Hero. Well listen up then, because Heroes can't be everywhere at once. And where you aren't, thousands of preventable deaths happen because you insist that we have to rely on you, on Chaldea." he sneered, "I need something that every soldier can have, not a select few that the bloody Church decides to shovel their fifth-hand shit to because they feel pity for us Godless Mortals. So I'm giving you one more chance to hand over that briefcase because I have my orders to carry out."
"That's classified," he said curtly, "If I did say exactly what the plans are, I'll literally be shot on the spot by my own men. That's how deep this goes, Servant. How long will your Masters and Servants take? How many people who's deaths could have prevented will be gone by then? And even then. There'll still be the gaps in the line NATO can't fill."
He grabbed onto the briefcase again right into Cu's face. Several soldiers in Black Uniforms around the Church stopped moving and stared at the growing confrontation
"And I'm not a hero. I'm Black Ops. I'm the furthest possible thing from that. We do shit in the dark that keeps NATO afloat. If we even win the war and what we did comes out, I can all but guarantee you we'll all be hung by the very people we protect. I for one can live with that. Even if it costs me. Heroes don't exist any more in this age. Just men like me willing to do what it takes to preserve the status quo. So don't you dare fucking go talking about me taking glory, you blue sack of shit, because if we make this, I won't officially exist. Knowing my chances when this is over my own commanders will take me behind the shed and cap me in the back of the skull before burying me in some unmarked grave. We get our hands dirty so the world doesn't have to. We don't exist so the world can."
"You Servants, many of your kind built your backs of on men like us. Men who did our jobs and faded into history, the result of our deeds added to yours. You want to talk about being a glory hound? How many of our corpses did it take for a mountain tall enough so you could go and reach the throne?"
His hand wandered to his revolver, not drawing it yet but flipping open the leather covering. "This little thing will be the salvation of mankind. So many lives at stake. I'm going to say this. You may be a servant. But you're injured. And I'm the only one preventing the strongest weapon since the Age of Gods from falling right on your heads."
"And as I can see, there are only two of you, and several dozen of my men here," he said coldly, "You may be Servants. But you're both injured. I'm willing to shore my bets that one of you ain't gonna walk away. And all I need is me to walk out with that briefcase. So tell me, you willing to make a bet? A bet that if you decide to take has the chip of millions of deaths on your hand?"
"We do what's necessary! I ain't gonna for a second say half the shit we've done is gonna get us the key to the Pearly Gates, but we do what needs to be done." he grimaced, "It seems in this hellhole we're the only one's that actually care about the civvies. The Church could give less of a damn it seems, we're just little ants in their way as they go burning heretics and not giving a single flying fuck about the peasants they trample under their feet. Chaldea hasn't had the chance to gather enough strength to protect anyone. NATO is the only force I can see right now within Italy that has both the strength and basic decency to protect the population. And we'll do anything to keep it, even if we have to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of lives just so our loved ones down south can see one more day, enjoy one more hour."
He stood up to the Golden Berserker despite the Servant dwarfing Revolver but a good five heads. "To each of us fell a task. And all that is required of us soldiers is that we stand the line and we die fighting. It is what we do best. We die standing. We're the only ones willing to do anything to takes to bring about salvation to humanity."
"I don't like this nuke I have under my orders, and I will despise myself for few days I have left to live for what I had to do, but like I said earlier. I will do anything, and everything it takes to save humanity under my guidance."
@Game Ping 1Suddenly dozens of gun barrels raised up at Revolver took several steps back. A commotion rose up between the civilians and even some of the Church members who stood up, drawing black keys and eyeing both the soldiers and the Servants, seemingly unsure of which to eliminate if things got hot.
Revolver raised his hand.
"That's enough. We have what we need."
And he began to walk away.
Then he stopped and turned back. "The wine cellars they use for mass still intact if you're interested."
@Squig"I last saw her over there," he pointed to massive pile of rubble easily twenty foot tall and made of broken brick and twisted steel. A good part of the fortress thick cathedral wall had collasped on top of it.
"I don't think you should try sir. If she's under there she's dead. And I'm not sure she would have wanted to waste your time, sir."
@SquigAfter several minutes of work Cu would find mounds of corpses under the rubble, crushed and burned and shot. The young priest found himself fighting at Cu's sight not to throw up but he stayed. For her.
"Oh thank lord, she's not there," he gasped a sigh of relief as the second last body was removed.
A body in black uniform with a tan jacket was buried really deep though, its red gloved hand sticking out at a broken angle. The arm itself had been shot multiple times.
@SquigWith a final tug and the arm literally almost tearing off the body, the corpse of a man with a red scarf and grey hair down to his neck was yanked out of the rubble. A revolver that had been in its holster clanked unto the rubble. The corpse was emaciated and had started rotting. There was a single hole in the middle of its forehead.
@SquigYou know who this was because you were talking to him barely eight hours ago and who had figuratively held a gun to your head. This is Revolver.
But this corpse is easily several days old by this point.
@Squig"No. Apart from a convoy of armoured cars that just arrived down south an hour or two ago. The Black Ops from NATO went to escort it through. Their leader told us to stay put and fortify the Cathedral."
@SquigIt's finger twitched slightly and its broken jaw cracked open.
"Heresy!" the priest beside Cu gasped.
@Squig"One of us. One of us. One of us. One of us. One of us. One of us." it muttered with its jaws clanking up and down.
"I won't stand for this," within the young Priest's hand appeared a black key.
@Squig"Gah!" the Priest dropped the Black Key and was trying to scramble for it in the rocks.
A loud raspy gasp came from the corpse, "Black Ops. Orders from High Command. Save Calias. Assist Chaldea."
@Squig"I don't know. We were on patrol. Then we met a team of GIGN that were sent to reinforce us. They killed us."
@Squig"Route?" it asked as if it had no idea, before its jaw chattered shut.
"It has to be on the last bridge over the river south. Just keep going until you see the Clock Tower beside it."
In the meantime in the Priest would go to find the others, shouting out despite the looks he got from the regular NATO soldiers and the civilians that they should meet him at the altar at once.
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @Grim) @ArbyOrNotToBe"I'm not sure. The Black Ops man with the revolver, uh," he scratched the back of his head, "Me and your Lancer just found his corpse in the rubble, days old. But I just saw him leave about an hour ago."
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"To the South Bridge at the Clock Tower. It's the last way out of this city! Your Lancer went after him less then a few seconds ago!"
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"What now?" he asked the others with a worried face, "This was a trick the entire time!"
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @ArbyOrNotToBe @Grim)"We found a corpse of the NATO man who just spoke with you, days old."
@ArbyOrNotToBe"He was killed by a team of... what do they call it... GIGN. And I have to assume he was somehow replaced."
@ArbyOrNotToBe"Because how could he have talked to you a few hours ago, when his corpse was under the rubble for what must have been the past few days?" he spoke, confused.
@ArbyOrNotToBe"He went to the bridge with the clock tower!"
"No. Make haste. I will attempt to fortify the Cathedral as best I can."
By the time that Cu and the others reached the bridge they found it a mangled mess of steel plunged into the waters below. There were tire tracks on the ground that lead south.
But on the ground just in front of the bridge was a radio-set leaning against a car that had been canablized for parts recently whose receiver was blinking.
@Squig @ArbyOrNotToBe @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @Grim)"Well, I'm assuming from the fact proxmity sensors are going off that someone is here." came a voice from the radio, Revolver's voice."
@ArbyOrNotToBe @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HTA chuckle, "I suppose sooner or later you would have found out."
"Let's say I'm not a person that says Sayonara so easily. Or I'm just a really good imitation actor. One of the two."
@ArbyOrNotToBe"That as well. Let me tell you Chaldea has been a very good pet, going around doing my dirty work for me. First getting rid of my ex, dealing with a rival of mine in a nice little proxy war, and getting me a very nice promotion within the ranks of NATO I have to say."
He stopped.
"I don't really see you as a enemy. I just see you as useful tools."
@ArbyOrNotToBe @Squig @Grim) @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"Yes, tools," Revolver spoke with an amused tone, "Tools that have given me a very nice pet to use in future endeavours."
"I'm assuming you'll try to come after me won't you? It's only reasonable when a smooth criminal took your war prize from under your nose."
"That'll be unwise to destroy the only mode of co-" the voice cut off suddenly as it was crushed.
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HTWhat now?
@ArbyOrNotToBe @Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @Grim)Would they chase or return to the Cathedral in the end?
The moment a decision is reached the Game will begin.
As far as they knew over the broken bridge there was only one road that lead south. Soon it would reach solid NATO territory, and it could be assumed it would be hard to explain one or two things on the behalf of the servants.
@Game Ping 1After several minutes of running already a dozen kilometers south, Cu could see a dust cloud straight ahead, maybe one more kilometer ahead.
@SquigThe speeds he was running at he was easily throwing up his own cloud of dust over the Italain countryside.
Almost in response one of the soldiers on the back of the truck lifted up a napalm rocket launcher and fired a rocket at Cu.
A range of one kilometer with a weapon that could go barely beyond three hundred.
Even he could tell that was unnatural.
(Dex save)
@SquigThe Naplam Rocket impacted just at the heels of Cu.
Flames licked at his back but the Servant was too fast. A few more seconds.
Running closer Cu knew he could catch up at the rate of the armoured cars were moving even at top speed, but he knew that unless he could slow it down that Kintoki would have a hard time catching up even as a Servant. These cars were modified and easily moving more then a hundred kilometers per hour despite their firepower.
@Squig"Get him off!" the five men on the vehicle didn't seem perturbed by the fact Cu was on.
Gripping onto the edge of the roof of the car so tight that it dented slightly, the soldier in the Black Ops uniform would suddenly leap onto the roof with a snub barrel P90 in its hand.
"You've made a mistake," a filtered raspy voice, "You should have listened to us."
@Squig"Oh Shit!" one of the cars attempted to swerve out of the way.
Despite the drivers attempt to do so the speed at which Kintoki approached and his brute strenght was too much.
"You're an fool you know that, Lancer," came another voice, not the soldiers that Cu had heard before. Cleaner and smoother, with a clear arrogance behind it.
Revolver.
"I did warn you regarding what I was stopping correct by sending that signal over and over agian?"
@SquigCaster, stop blocking the signal. I just realized what it meant
Cu telepathically said to Da VinciCrushing Cu's chest with the weight of a bull, the man was about to ram his machine gun right into the servant's eye socket...
@Squig"God dammit," the filtered voice breathed.
"You can help by getting off," Revolver's voice followed quickly. "I'm afraid we aren't a rideshare service."
@Squig"You're assuming I want it fixed. If anything. This jamming of yours works to my favour." he said, "I assume you weren't the only ones who found out about my little secret."
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"You know," the voice said, "There's something familiar about you. Have we met before?"
"Again, why would it be in my interests to stop what's about to happen in Milan? I did just say it was in my interests."
@Squig"Ooooor, I could just shoot the radio right now. End any hope of yours to stop that strike." the voice said.
@Squig (edited)"Let's have a deal then," the voice said, "Milan will hold with soldiers loyal to me I have nearby. You will end your harassment of me and I will send them in. They will ensure that Milan will hold."
"But everyone at that Cathedral must die. A last stand. They'll be made martyrs and heroes, a symbol for the survivors of humanity to rally around."
@Squig"So long as they don't spill the beans."
@Squig"Nope. He'll have to go, he was the one I overheard going for the rubble. Bad luck it was the same where I hid the body. I was in a rush and had no choice," there was venom in his voice, "My men will be able to more then able to take up his slack."
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"I was telling the truth." the voice was cold and sure, "I need the power to save humanity. If I need to kill ten to save a hundred, I kill twenty to be sure that hundred survives. I don't need idiots like you in my way."
"This is not my only identity, but this is one I cannot afford to lose."
"Good grief, my Master will surely be intriguing by this"
Cu thought, it never crossed his mind the possibilities that he would agree to such terms and conditions. In the end, he understood his words and would probably do that if that's what needed but he couldn't cope with the blood and sorrow of the innocent on his spear
"You're blunt but sharp, you will do anything to fulfill that greater good of yours. Can't blame it."
"If I can modify the memories of those within the Church. What would the odd be on you letting them live?" Cu asked, he didn't want to "resort" to his last plan so it's worth a shot"I have no assurance you will do what you say. Nor will I have the assurance that all witnesses are accounted for."
"That's the assurance. But how can I be sure you find every single witness?"
The head of the replacement driver disappeared in a puff of blood and the car began to swerve out of control.
"Dammit," with a swear the other GIGN soldier leapt a superhuman distance to another car in front, swinging around the cannon on top of the forward car.
"Gah!" he cried out as his foot was crushed, "Why the General won't allow us to go all out, I'll never understand!"
Suddenly with the destroy wheeled, the car swerved and then flipped over a good ten meters in the air.
The two servants only had miliseconds to decide their next course of action as the car thirty feet in front of them gasped in amazement.
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"And why wouldn't you kill once you're close enough with that spell?"
@Squig"Interesting." he said, "Well you've dealt with two of my cars. That's going to have to come out of my pocket. But you have a deal. We'll pull over to the side in ten seconds."
"Anything I see as hostile, I will destroy the radio."
@SquigThe three remaining cars stopped by the road into a open piece of farmland and a total of six soldiers stepped out in front. A few more were left in the cars either manning machine guns or rocket launchers if anything went wrong.
A figure stepped out from the lead car with his signature revolver in one hand and a large radio transceiver in the other.
"So, this spell of yours?" he said with a smug look on his face.
"And you can mass-produce it on a scale to fit possibly thousands?"
"Apologies," he chuckled, "Let's say three hundred. This day has been hectic enough. And what's to say you can be sure to account for the estimated 300 that you find? All it takes is one that knows who gets away to spread the word."
"A team of mages are nice. But how can you be absolutely sure? Just because you have a team of Mages with you, isn't a surefire confirmation for me, lancer." his voice was diffrent by this point, not really Revolver's any more. It was smoother, less gruff and brash like the identity he had taken.
Passive Perception: 24
Cu could notice that the skin around his right cheek was beginning to flake.
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @Squig"Not a wise thing to mention," he was about to scratch it but he stopped himself, "Especially since I'm holding the king of hearts."
"I'll have your word then I suppose, Hound, but if that is the case, then all members of the church I or you find at that Cathedral must die. I will not risk even a single whisper escaping from them because I have little intention of drawing the ire of the Burial Agency during this time."
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @Squig"There's a reason I've lasted this long."
"How would you even do that?" he crossed his arms, "And what if the Church decides to send their own men up to Milan?"
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"You haven't told me how you'll keep them there," he sighed, "I'm growing tired of this charade, Lancer."
He pointed his pistol at the radio. "Nuclear fallout, but at the very least a Ground Zero isn't liable to talk. How's that sound?"
(edited)"Your arrogance and inability to read a situation is astounding, Lancer," Revolver said quietly. "I wouldn't have stopped if I was sure I had covered all odds."
Cu would notice that a patch of his neck straight up fell of, revealing a diffrent skin tone that was less pinkish and slightly more pale.
He holstered his revolver and instead drew a small unassuming pocket pistol.
But the both of them could visibly see dark tendrils of necrotic energy warping around the barrel.
"So answer my question, Lancer, how can you ensure for certainty that no Church member will speak a single whisper? How can you keep them in place in Milan?"
@Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT @Squig”You’re right. We’ll keep talking circles at this point.” he holstered his pistol. “Go do what you intend in Milan. I’ll be watching.”
He reached down to the radio. “Alpaca Six Niner. Call off the strike. We’ve delayed them long enough at Milan. I told you I was right for calling Chaldea in.”
With a click he shut the connection, “There. That’s my part of the deal. Now yours.”
@Squig"We'll meet again I'm sure. You keep your end of the deal. I keep mine. Simple as that." the man said before he motioned his men to follow him. But as he made his way into the car the entire skin sloughed off his face like molten steel, splashing onto the doorstep.
Cu would catch from the distance only a glimpse, but a glimpse enough of the face underneath.
(edited)Then the thing that had worn Revolvers face glanced back, and Cu would be able to tell there was a grin as he watched them disappear over the horizon.
Within Milan there had been a few assault by Dead stragglers, but the soldiers and Executors had seen them off easily enough with few losses. Sitting outside on the ruined square was the young priest from earlier, staring south absently as he awaited any news.
"Cheeky bastard"
Cu thought when he saw a strange glimpse from "Revolver". With that in mind, he ran back to Milan with Kintoki.
Back there, greeting them was the sight and smell of corpses and bones of the Dead. As fresh as if a battle had just passed. He calmly walked over to the priest, drawing a rune beforehand (Detect Thoughts) and decided to rile up a conversation
"The event still bothered you?" Cu askedHe stood up as several Executors moved into the square for the two returning servants.
Cu could tell with his spell all of them had on the mind of a corpse under the rubble.
"Did you get him?" Leonardo anxiously asked.
He took a deep breath.
"Most of our Executors. I told none of the soldiers and the corpse it in the basement in the cooled wine cellar. Once the situation calms down I'm sending a call to Rome to send someone to check the corpse." he said. "I placed a silent kill order on all NATO Black Ops that were under that man's command still in the city shortly after you left. But before we could even move they had all disappeared."
(edited)"Five of us. Not including me. We've taken heavy losses this day and the day before when Vlad's army knew no end in numbers."
"You didn't say earlier. What happened back there?" he asked quietly.
"Lancer... Sakata... what's going on?" Leonardo asked as his eyes went wide in shock.
"No... no..." Leonardo stutted, "This can't be happening."
"I abjure thee with the fires of heaven!" an Executor blasted a black key at Cu's feet. For a moment nothing happened before a pillar of incinerating flame erupted from underneath.
With a gasp Leonardo woke up with a shock. "Don't hurt them!" he cried, "Buy me time. They must be under a spell of some sort!"
With that it was all silent and six members of the church were lying very still.
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"Scathach hit me for this"
As the chant was invoked, the Executors were made so that their memories about the events were deleted and they would just treat it as another corpse.
"The corpse wasn't the soldier's, it's just another unwanted casualty." Cu said, finishing his spell. The Priest began to stir slightly.
@Squig @Thunder - LS | ED | DO | HT"Wha..." he began as he blinked, "What's going on?"
"Dead?" he rose up and touched his bloody temple from Cu's strikes, He looked around and saw several dead in the square, "I don't get it. What happened?"
He squinted as he rubbed his head and looked at the corpses, "Those few knocked us all out? Were they Nightmares or something? Why are we still alive?"
"Ugh, man." he looked around as the others began to wake, "How are we not dead? We'd all have been turned or at least one of us dead."
"That must be the red spear I think I remember. Whatever hit me in the head it was something hard and fast," he said as he shook himself off, "And blue and gold in a blur..."
Leonardo looked up, his eyes dancing between Sakata and Cu, "At the very least the two of you are alright. Milan is safe and it won't be falling anytime soon."
An Executor that had left a few seconds before returned out with a piece of paper in his hand, waving it.
"Sir! It's official. The Vampire King is slain at the hands of Chaldea's Van Helsing."
"I suppose I gotta head evacuation and reconstruction efforts now. Can't have the Cathedral in such a state when the Father returns" he said, "How about the two of you?"
"Ah!" the Priest said, "In the cooled cellars under the cathedral we have the finest Italain Vintage we use for mass and feasts."
"Sure thing, let's save it for when we win. In the meantime, I have an evacuation to oversee" and with that he would begin to walk back to the church with anyone free to follow him to help.
`"Go and station around Milan, if any Church members try to leave, report back to me"
Cu telepathically said to his mages before causally following after Leonardo.
It didn't even ring once and it was picked up.
"Well I see that you've decided to take my offer," came His voice. She could tell there were voices in the background.
@Vormal/Asstolfo/Morban/Sword/Cat
The Phone rang again.
The cold voice came through, "So it this a refusal?"
"Even if they will stab you as you reach for the grail?"
"You'd have removed one from the equation. You have enough to deal with at the moment won't you?"
"I'm going to remind you one more time what happens to those who go back on their deal."

The black-keys had rendered it a mess, a bloody gouge but the right eye was somewhat intact, still useable but not withouth cleaning.
This reality will crumble away into dust the moment the grail is seized. Saving lives of these that will lose them is a pointless endeavour.

.Suddenly two soldiers appeared out of the rubble in heavy hazmat gear with NATO insignia on their shoulder patches. Heavy gas masks covered their faces with cameras on the side of their helmets.
They looked too familiar to Veronica.
"The hell is going on here?" their voices were electronic and through their respirators, hiding their true voice.
@Vormal/Asstolfo/Morban/Sword/Cat @Andle | Cam, Ib, RachHowever as Nightningale and Veronique began to speak they each looked away from the battle as if they were running towards them, and covered the audio receptors with their hands.
And it seemed they turned back only when Florence was attacking the General, recording all of it as they rushed forward.
They're explicitly here only to record what they want to be seen. Not what is seen.
@Vormal/Asstolfo/Morban/Sword/CatAs she spoke they covered the audio-recorders so they wouldn't record what she said.

It seemed that not even the Curse of Restoration was working to heal the missing limb.
The soldier grappling Vee even looked back in shock, even his gas mask unable to hide it.
"I've been at his side since the First Great War," the soldier spoke, "It's either his way, or no way."
"Good soldiers follow orders," is all the man said.

"Good soldiers follow orders."
"Good soldiers follow orders."
"Good soldiers follow orders."
"Good soldiers follow orders."
He repeated almost at a scream.
She could tell he wasn't charmed.
He was fanatical having followed the General for a hundred years.
With that the field of rubble was silent at last.
For the moment at least.
@Vormal/Asstolfo/Morban/Sword/Cat @Andle | Cam, Ib, RachAs if almost on cue just as she made for it, there was the wail of jet engines overhead.
The body was pretty ruined at this point, but she managed to get it out just as the first bombs landed to vaporize the area.
The body in Nightingale's arms started to bleed.
Far more then any body should.
Blood was no beginning to pour out of every orfice, streaming from his eyes and nose in torrents, as it began to reject the malformed Ideal Blood within it.
(edited)Jabbing it with the Black Key which is designed to destroy it, caused the entire body to suddenly erupt in black fire.
Not much was salvaged before it turned to ash, just a small vial of blood. Maybe able to be used once or twice at most.
It shot back at her, even knowing it hurt like black needles were growing in her. It's basic structure was clear to her. It was seemed a normal enough Makarov Pistol but underneath...
And with it part of its history was simply bleeding out of it.
Stolen from the deepest vaults of the clocktower, withdrawn by a man who wore the face of a Clock Tower lord.
Embedded with the single remaining feather of the Eagle God Garuda who had challenged the Gods to save his mother, and had slain all who had opposed him. Gods who by all right should have been immortal. An attempt by humanity to create a Divine Construct.
Siver Alcipiter.
A cursed weapon designed to kill Gods.
That is why a hundred men died so its thief could cover his tracks. But he could not unlock its powers. Garuda had slain the Gods in the name of justice and love, he had taken it only for malice and hate. And so that is why it locked itself to him despite decades of him attempting to break it.
Until it had come into the hands of an unassuming Nurse who had killed its owner not in hate nor malice, but in the name of justice and to prevent a greater evil.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Siver Alcipiter. (2 attunement slots)
The bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +3, and the weapon does an extra 3d6 necrotic energy.
Hit points lost to this weapon's damage can be regained only through a short or long rest, rather than by regeneration, magic, or any other means.
Curse. Whenever you roll a 1 on an attack roll using this weapon, the weapon bends or flies to hit you in the back. Make a new attack roll with advantage against your own AC. If the result is a hit, you take damage as if you had attacked yourself with.
And with that the weapon went silent to her, having told her all she needed to know.
There was always Milan Cathedral itself.
